We have always read that the vagina is self-cleansing and most people agree with that. Although growing up was with a very different perspective. We were taught to wash out the vagina with soap and water. Imagine growing up with a certain ideology and then discovering that you were so wrong. The truth is the vaginal area can be washed with soap and water but not the vagina itself. The vagina is truthfully self-cleansing and if you want to clean at all you should use only water. The artificial soaps and intimate washes usually affect the normal bacterial flora of the vagina and can make the vagina prone to diseases. In order to avoid diseases and infections getting into the vagina just clean out with water. It is also advised that women urinate before and after sex. This also helps prevent the spread of urinary tract infections. Vaginal douching is another common practice among women. Although no one can categorically say this practice helps prevent infection. Most doctors also advise women to wear cotton panties through the day. It is also advisable to sleep without panties at night. This practice helps to air out the vagina and keep it healthy, germ-free and smell free.
